350 arrested in Chennai after protests over Anitha’s suicide

Around 350 persons who protested on Sunday against Central government in connection with the suicide of MBBS aspirant S. Anitha were arrested and released in different parts of the city.

According to police, the protests were held at nine places across the city. Around 10.50 a.m., over 100 members of the May 17 Organisation, Tamizhar Vidyal Katchi and Dec 3 Organisation, under the leadership of Praveen Kumar staged a protest in T. Nagar.

They walked towards the BJP office, condemning the Central government and shouting slogans, around 11.10 a.m when they were arrested.

They were detained at a marriage hall on Sivaji Ganesan Road and released in the evening.

Ten members of other student outfits who proceeded to protest in front of the BJP office were also arrested. Similarly, around 30 students staged a road roko in the subway close to Loyola college.

The Nungambakkam police rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd.

Cadre of the DMK, VCK and CPI(M) were also arrested for staging protests in different parts of the city. They were later released.


Over 700 persons participated in silent meetings and candle light vigil in 14 locations in Chennai in remembrance of Anitha.
